Library Gensis The S.V.University Library was started in 1955 with a small collection of 6,700 books taken from the Sri Venkateswara College, Tirupati, administered by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams. The University Library, centrally situated and easily accessible to all the departments on the campus has steadily grown over the years and it has 3,68,315 documents as on 31st March, 2014. The collection of the library includes textbooks, reference books, general books, gift books, reports, back volumes of journals, M.Phil., & Ph.D., dissertations and e-documents. The Library subscribes to about 465 current journals of national and international importance by spending Rs.6.75 lakhs per year.
Building The present building was declared open in July 1964, by Late Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India. He described it as “Taj Mahal of the South”. The plinth area of the library building is about 56,637 sq. ft. of which 19,558 sq.ft. is occupied by the Stack Area, 16,980 sq. ft. is reader’s area, 5,100 sq. ft. is the work space and the rest for miscellaneous use. The library has four reading halls with a seating capacity for 400 users at a time.
Objectives The objectives of the library are : To support the educational, research and extension programmes ( present and anticipated ) of Sri Venkateswara University by providing access to global information To provide reading facility and services to the students for the success of all formal programmes of instruction To provide need based information products and services to facilitate scholarly research in the fields of special interest to the University To help the faculty members inorder to keep abreast of latest developments in their respective fields To co-operate with other libraries in India and abroad for resource sharing and networking
Working Hours The Library is opened throughout the year except on six Public Holidays. Week Days : 8.00 A.M. - 8.00 P.M. Sundays & Holidays : 10.00 A.M. - 5.00 P.M.
Collection Arrangement In order to provide better service to the users of the library, the huge and perennial growth of its collection has been arranged in such a manner that books and back volumes of journals on Science and Technology are housed in newly constructed Extension Building and books and back volumes of journals on Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities are housed in three floors of the Stack Area of the library building, so that readers may not find any difficulty in locating the documents of their choice.
Library Organization In order to achieve functional efficiency, the library is organized into 11 different sections. They are Circulation Section, Book Acquisitions Section, Periodicals Section, Technical Processing Section, Stack Area (Science & Technology), Stack Area (Arts, Humanities &Social Sciences), Reference Section, Competitive Examinations Cell & Text Book Section, Binding Section, Digital Library and Administrative Section.
Services The Library follows Open Access System in all the wings of the Library. Besides Book Lending service, the library offers Reader’s Advisory Service, Reference Service, Reprograpic Service, Inter-Library Loan facility and Facility to Search E-Journals, OPAC, Databases and Internet Resources.
Membership The library has transformed into a Knowledge Resource Centre today catering especially to the information needs of students, research scholars and faculty members numbering around 10,000 and it is the central facility for 4 constituent colleges of S.V.University including University College of Engineering.
Staff As on today, 10 Professionals, 4 semi-professionals and 44 supporting staff are working in the library. Among the professional staff, 3 members have Ph.D. degrees and 3 members have M.Phil., degrees.
Other Facilities Competitive Examinations Cell The novel feature of S.V.University Library is the establishment of Competitive Examinations Cell with the main objective of providing reading material for student community preparing for various competitive examinations. The cell provides books and journals relating to Civil Services, Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, GATE, CAT, UGC-NET and other competitive examinations. The cell has about 20,000 documents relating to various competitive examinations
ICT Infrastructure The S.V.University Library is a member in the INFLIBNET Programme of UGC. Under this programme, the V-Sat facility to have access to Internet is installed in SVU Computer Centre. The INFLIBNET has provided 10 Mbps connectivity to S.V. University. The Computer Centre has provided Internet connectivity to all the Departments/Institutions on the Campus. UGC provided Rs. 6.5 lakhs (Non-Recurring grant) and Rs.1.72 Lakhs (Recurring Grant) for computerisation of SVU Library under INFLIBNET Programme. The library has a bibliographic database of 1,80,000 records which includes books, theses and dissertations and back volumes of periodicals.
Membership in other networks Under UGC-INFONET Programme, SVU Library is providing getting access to about 8000+ online resources. As member of DELNET (Developing Library Network), New Delhi, SVU Library is providing online access to DELNET information resources.
SVU Digital Library In order to provide access to e-resources SVU Library has established a Digital Library in the year 2005 which can accommodate 42 users at a time.
The various services that are available in SVU Digital Library are: Online Open Access Journals ( Directory of Open Access Journals - DOAJ ) The website of DOAJ provides access to about 9,966 Open access journals. Any one can access the full text of journals at free of cost. SVU Library provide a link from its home page to DOAJ website.
Institutional Repository Institutional repository has been designed and developed for Ph.D. Theses submitted to S.V. University by using DSpace. At present, 1,201 Ph.D. theses have been digitalized and uploaded into the repository. In future, the library has planned to develop institutional repositories of M.Phil., dissertations, publications of faculty and question papers.
OPAC A link is provided in the home page of SVU Library to its OPAC( Online Public Access Catalogue ). OPAC can be accessed from any where through Internet. The users can search the availability of documents through OPAC.
User Orientation Programme: SVU Library is conducting User Orientation Programme every year to the freshers at the beginning of the academic year.
Future plans of the Library Creation of a database of CD-ROM books. Development of Institutional Repositories of M.Phil., dissertations, publications of faculty members and question papers.
